About the Workshop

The goal of this class is to be able to compose effective and expressive figures in art.
This will be developed and improved through the study of anatomy, which helps us capture the essence of form through an understanding of how the parts of the body function.

Learning Outcomes

  • A functional understanding of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Gain confidence in interpreting, designing, and inventing the human form in art.
  • Practice synthesizing conceptual anatomical knowledge with direct observation from a model in figure drawing.
  • Analysis of how the human form is approached and interpreted throughout art history with emphasis on Renaissance Florence.
  • Methodology for self study of anatomy and drawing.
  • Analysis of meaning and expression in your artistic representation of the human form.
  • Nourish and develop your innate artistic curiosity.

Course Structure

This is a 16 week course. Each week covers a different area of the human body, progressing from the axial to the appendicular skeleton. The first half of each class is a lecture and the second half of class will be spent drawing directly from a live model.

About the Artist

Charlie Antolin (he/him) is a Northern California-based artist working in figurative drawing, painting, and sculpture. He holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design. In addition to his work with Underpainting Collective, Charlie has taught and presented at Bay Area institutions including the Richmond Art Center, EastSide Arts Alliance, and the Arts & Crafts Cooperative, Inc. Gallery.

Charlie has been part of the atelier community for over fifteen years, growing from devoted student to Head Instructor. His teaching is rooted in the fundamental principles of historical representational art and specifically the craft of oil painting passed down through a tradition he has spent his career deepening.
