The Underpainting Collective: School of Drawing and Painting is an Oakland-based cooperative atelier dedicated to art education and fostering a community of artists. Our mission is to empower artists to produce meaningful and impactful work that reflects their unique perspectives and styles, while also supporting the development of emerging and experienced artists alike.
The Atelier School of Classical Realism
Founded by David Hardy, the Atelier School of Classical Realism is an Oakland art institution dedicated to teaching and preserving 18th Century observational art. The atelier lives on through our foundational drawing and painting evening classes.

We need to raise $30,000. Your contributions will support us to jointly-run a school that reflects our shared values of a more diverse and equitable future where we create art that enables people to envision themselves as freer beings.

• Create welcoming environment for artists of all ages and skill levels to gather, dream and support one another
• Maintain rent payments on our physical space
• Pay for figure models and compensate instructors
• Hold workshops in oil painting traditions and expand offerings to include more mediums
• Host retreats and support groups
